Welcome to FS2

Working Together To Be The Best We Can Be

The FS2 team would like to welcome you to our FS2 page.

Here you will find lots of information about all the fun things Class 2 and Class 3 are learning about as well as some useful information to support our learning.

Meet the teaching team

Mrs Scott and Miss Shipley are pleased to be the teachers working in FS2 this year supported by Mrs Wilkes, Mrs Marshall, Mrs Edge and Miss Eccleston. We also have our lovely Mrs Dyson, Mrs Baines and Miss Smart to help us too!

We are really looking forward to an exciting year working with the FS2 children and parents/carers.

Reading

Reading is at the heart of our Hetts Lane curriculum and we want every child to become successful, confident and fluent readers.

Each week, every child will read their Rhino Readers, decodable book at least 3 times a week with an adult in school. They will then bring home a further decodable book to read to you at home. Your child will also bring home a story book of their choosing to share.

It is really important that you read with your child at home. Please read 4 times a week and complete the weekly reading challenge task. Record in your child’s reading log to show when you have read with your child. They will be rewarded with a certificate for showing commitment to reading at the end of every half term. We also reward 2 star readers every week. These are children who have worked hard and tried their best to show improvement.

We aspire to develop a love of reading so everyday all children will listen to and engage with a story at the end of the day.  Children will also be introduced to an author each half term and have access to our recommended reads to expand their reading experiences and exposure to rich vocabulary and a variety of texts.

For further information about our reading curriculum, please see our Curriculum page - English.

Phonics

At Hetts Lane we use Twinkl phonics as our Systematic, Synthetic Phonics Programme (SSP).

Everyday your child will develop their phonic skills through the stories and adventures of Kit, Sam and the Twinkl phonics family. This is integrated with games, activities and tasks which allows the children regular practise of the core skills of blending and segmenting to enable them to read and write.

We also use Rhino Readers books which are exactly aligned to the Twinkl phonic phases. This keeps a focus on phonics and supports children’s early decoding skills as they move through each level of phonics. Twinkl phonics based activities are sent home each week to help consolidate what has been learnt in school.

Please see the our Curriculum page - Phonics for further information.

Useful information

Our daily routine

The doors open at 8.20am.

Our lunch time is 11.30am until 12.30pm.

The children leave school at 2.50pm.

Every day the children will access a 20 minute whole class phonics lesson. This is then followed on by a 10 minute writing activity. This enables the children to learn new sounds and apply these in a range of fun ways to ensure that the learning is fully embedded.

The children will have access to a range of independent learning within the classroom. These are changed frequently to provide the children with the next step in their learning. There is something for everyone, with phonics, maths, role play, writing, fine motor, creative and much more for the children to enjoy.

Exploring the world around us is an essential part of the children's learning and they will spend time exploring our outdoor area every day. It is essential that your child comes to school with the appropriate clothing for this. Please make sure that they have a warm, waterproof coat with a hat, scarf and gloves in the winter and a sun hat for hotter days. The children have opportunities to climb, ride bikes and run around so please make sure that they are earing appropriate foot wear.

What your child needs

Every day your child should bring:

  • their reading folder - containing their reading book, reading diary and Brilliant Book
  • a water bottle
  • appropriate outdoor clothing

PE

Children need a PE kit in school with them every day.  Please encourage your child to get dressed as independently as possible at home. We will be starting to change the children for PE. This will initially involve changing just the children's shoes and moving onto the children getting fully changed as their independent changing skills increase.

PE kit should include:

  • a white t-shirt
  • black shorts or jogging bottoms
  • plimsolls or trainers

Please ensure all PE kit and uniform is labelled clearly.  This helps save time, confusion and will help prevent it being lost.
