Phonics

Polysyllabic words!

So the final part of phonics that we will be looking at is polysyllabic words. This is where a word contains more than 1 syllable. These words can be tricky to read because they are long so we encourage the children to 'chop' them up to help them to read the word.

Here is how we would chop up these words:

igloo > ig - loo                                   meerkat > meer - kat

duckling > duck - ling                        scooter > scoo - ter

Some words we have to chop up more than once. Eg.

        chimpanzee > chim - pan - zee          skeleton > skel - e - ton

Here are the PDFs for the week. The first 3 have the words chopped up to support your child's reading, the last 2 allow your child to have a go at chopping the word up themselves.
